Environmental Education and Environmental Awareness Building in Vayots Dzor Region, Armenia

Name in English “Environmental Education and Awareness Building in Vayots Dzor Region of Armenia”.
Evangelical Students Association (FEST) Research Center Hans Diefenbacher, Schmaylweg 5, D-69118 Heidelberg, Germany.
Project implementation period Fall 2019 – April 2020

Short description of the project:

This project aims to raise environmental awareness of the rural population of the Wyot Dzor region of Southern Armenia and address some issues related to waste management and increased energy consumption in the region. This goal will be achieved through the transfer of knowledge during environmental seminars and through a series of practical small-scale pilot projects aimed at raising awareness of possible changes in people’s habits towards a more sustainable lifestyle.

As we are all concerned about the state of the environment, the proposed project is considered to be a pilot project of the Syunik-Development NGO in Armenia and organized as one of the partnership projects with the Christian Environmental Aid Institute in the Czech Republic and the European Christian Ecological Network.

This project will also help to address the growing energy crisis in the face of global warming and to highlight the unused renewable energy resources, especially solar energy, relevant to our region. Climate change and the unresolved issue of an aging nuclear power plant in Armenia, which is in the area of seismic activity, makes the transition to renewable energy even more urgent. This project will help prepare for a further project involving the construction of a Renewable Energy Demonstration Center in order to familiarize the local population with the uses and benefits of solar energy.

Innovation and uniqueness of the project:

The innovativeness of the project is reflected in the connection between theory and practice during the seminars. People will be motivated to take action by better understanding environmental issues and being able to implement small projects in practice.

Target groups:

Church figures and priests:

The Vayots Dzor region in Armenia is currently trying to address a number of environmental issues, including waste management, mining, energy and water. This situation is well known to the local Church, which wants to help people improve the environmental situation in the region and help raise awareness of the local population about environmental issues.

Local authorities and community representatives:

At present, the deterioration of the environmental situation is accompanied by the helplessness of our authorities and the local population. Low awareness and lack of environmental knowledge are becoming apparent, so involvement of local authorities is essential to the success of the project.

Local community representatives:

All environmental legislation, the formulation of new policies or the implementation of innovative projects is impossible without the active participation and support of society at all levels, based on public awareness. Remaining important is the presence of educated and active community members. The daily actions of community and civil society representatives have a significant impact on the environment. The driving force behind the reduction of negative environmental impacts, both locally and globally, is currently education, which is the primary purpose of this project.
